Describe your event or Safety concern with your Own Words

I flew my DJI mini 3 during the ski holidays. I saw a flock of black birds circling over my drone. Shortly after, one of the birds tried to grab my drone in mid-flight. The aircraft crashed in an area of high mountain, impossible to access.

Technical analysis

Hello Veronika, thank you for your report and sorry for the loss of your drone. Bird Attack/Strike is a recurring issue. Among raptors, a drone flying too close to a nest may be perceived as a predator that needs to be driven away or eliminated. Raptors typically attack by diving from above, which makes it safer to escape by climbing rapidly rather than descending. This can be done either by activating Return-to-Home (RTH) with a preset altitude higher than the current one, or by manually flying upward. Some birds, however, may approach a drone out of curiosity, especially if the drone is hovering or moving slowly. In such cases, they may fly closer to investigate the unfamiliar object. On the other hand, many birds will choose to avoid drones entirely, particularly if startled by the noise. Nesting birds may even abandon their nests if they feel threatened. The best way to prevent bird attacks- and to support wildlife conservation- is to avoid flying near birds whenever possible. As the DJI user manual says, don’t operate the aircraft near flocks of birds. See DJI manuals : Flight Environment Requirements. Corrective/Preventive actions : 👉 Remember to climb in case of a bird attack, even if it feels counterintuitive. RTH can be a fast and good escape maneuver. 👉 Avoid getting too close to cliffs and rock walls where the nests may be. Keep at least 50 meters of distance. ( 200 meters of distance during the nesting period ) . Use the tele camera instead.
