Describe your event or Safety concern with your Own Words
It was a routine flight with my Mavic 3 Pro. Some people came up to me, curious about my drone, and started asking questions. I was trying to answer while still flying it. On the way back, I didn’t see power lines about a mile out and 300 ft high. The drone nearly collided with them.
Technical analysis
Hello Joe, You are an experienced pilot. Here’s a trap that any pilot can fall into, regardless of their level of experience. Contributing factors : In manned aviation, there is a well-established safety principle known as the sterile cockpit rule, which prohibits unnecessary conversation and distractions during critical phases of flight. This concept is equally applicable to drone operations. Flying a drone is a complex task that requires divided attention. The operator must maintain situational awareness of flight path, terrain and obstacles clearance, and monitor the drone’s condition – while also moving the sticks. Engaging in a conversation during flight may overload the pilot’s short-term memory, also named the working memory, adding some extra stress to the situation. As a result, information processing may suffer and decision-making can become impaired. More recent research suggests that we can store up to 5 independent items in our short-term memory, depending on the individual, their experience, and their level of fatigue. The retention duration is about 10 to 30 seconds without active rehearsal. Corrective/Preventive Actions : 👉 If you feel overwhelmed by the situation, know it can happen to any of us. The important thing is to recognize it quickly. Release the sticks and prioritize your actions : Talk or Fly ! 👉 You can also use the RTH mode to bring the drone back safely.
